The fit-for-55 package brought major developments, notably in the Energy Efficiency Directive and Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. The number of provisions and level of details may be seen as complex, diverting efforts from implementation. Whereas simplification is among the priorities of the new Commission.
Energy savings and flexibility have been essential to overcome the recent energy crises. This has created a momentum for energy efficiency, as seen in the Global Pledge to double energy efficiency progress. In the meantime, energy affordability remains a key issue, while the energy system is becoming incomprehensible to many consumers. It is thus important to ensure that energy efficiency and related low-hanging fruits do not fade into the background.
The preparation of the post-2030 energy efficiency framework is an opportunity to put these discussions into perspective. Coming back to facts & figures, and looking at practical examples, can support an evidence-based policy discussion about the role and contributions of energy efficiency to meet the Energy Union’s objectives.
The session builds on latest findings from major EU LIFE projects (ODYSSEE-MURE, SEED-MICAT, ENEFIRST+ and SaveEnergyTogether), together with the experience of two policy officers (EU and national level). We will discuss challenges encountered in policy design and implementation, solutions to overcome them, and to what extent good practices can be disseminated and scaled up.
